SENSEI STEVE APSEGA, SANDAN

   

PERSONAL HISTORY

  • Started formally training in the Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito system in 1986
  • Opened first dojo (school) in Whitneyville, Maine in 1990.
  • Promoted to Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) on June 10, 1992.
  • Joined and served the United States Marine Corps from 1994-1998.
  • Corporal (E-4) Security Forces in Rota, Spain for the United States Marine Crops in 1995.
  • Honorably Discharged from the United States Marine Corps in 1998. (Airborne Certified)
  • Opened Hermon Branch of Maine Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo in 2000.
  • Promoted to Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) on June 10, 2000.
  • Opened Orrington Branch of Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo in 2002.
  • Promoted to Sandan (3rd Degree Black Belt) on May 22, 2004
  • Opened Brewer Branch of Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo in 2003.
  • Traveled to Okinawa, Japan to train with Hanshi Kise and Kaicho Isao Kise on October 6, 2004.
  • Traveled to Okinawa, Japan a second time to train with Hanshi Fusei Kise and Kaicho Isao Kise in October of 2006.
  • Trains regularly with his teacher Brad Hamel, Godan (5th Degree Black Belt) in Ellsworth Maine.
  • Attends and assists his teacher to host annual visits with Hanshi Fusei Kise and Kiacho Isao Kise when coming to the United States. 

 

 

 

ASSIST. INSTRUCTORS

SEMPAI LUCAS PIERCE- NIDAN

  

Sempai Lucas Pierce is a Nidan (2nd Degree Black Belt) and head student of Sensei Steve Apsega at the Brewer Dojo. Lucas is one of Sensei Apsega's original students and has trained under him for 8-years.   He has always studied under the Okinawa Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo System.  He was promoted to Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt) in 2004. He plans to attend The University of Maine at Orono upon completion of High School at Hermon High.

 

 

SEMPAI JOE LACOMBE- SHODAN 

   

Sempai Joe LaCombe is a Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt), He started his training in kickboxing 1994.  He has trained with Sensei Apsega since 2002.  He was promoted to Shodan in September of 2006.  His future plans are to open and operate the Madison/Skowhegan area with the study of Matsumura Seito Karate and Kobudo System in 2008.  He obtained his Masters Degree at Orono in Music Education in 2003.  He also obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, 2001.  His current employment is professionally teaching 5th through 12th graders at The Madison SAD 59 School system.

 

 

SEMPAI TIM BROWN- SHODAN 

 

Sempai Tim Brown is a Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt).  He started his training in Grappling and Boxing.  He is a non-lethal weapons and tactics Instructor by The Department of Defense.  He started studying under Sensei Apsega in 2002.  He was promoted to Shodan in 2006.  Tim always shows the utmost passion for the art.  Tim is currently studying Criminal Justice at the University of Maine at Bangor Campus.  Tim is a Staff Sgt. (101st Security Forces Squadron) at the National Air Guard Base here in Bangor, Maine. 

 

 

SEMPAI DAN COLAGEO- SHODAN  

  

Sempai Dan Colageo is a Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt).  He started his training when he was 8 years old in Massachuttes under a respected teacher.  He started training under Sensei Apsega in September 2004.  Dan has excellent attention to detail and knowledge of the body mechanics and how it is used in the Okinawa Matsumura System.  He was promoted to Shodan in 2007.  Dan is currently teaching beginner youth and adult class at the Brewer Dojo.  He is a well rounded individual, he plays at the Brewer High School Drama and Music Program and well respected in his community.  His future is also to attend the University of Maine at Orono in 2008.

 

 

 

SEMPAI JASON BURGESS- SHODAN

 

Sempai Jason Burgess is a Shodan (1st Degree Black Belt).  he started training in various martial art systems including Shaolin Kempo.  He started training under Sensei Apsega in 2004.  He was promoted to Shodan in 2007.  He is currently a professional 8th grade teacher at The Caravel Middle School.  He obtained his Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education at The University of Maine at Orono in 2002.  Jason is also currently teaching a beginner adult class at the Brewer Dojo.
